-- White people like Sushi
Regardless if you are vegetarian, vegan, or just guilty about eating
meat, all white people love Sushi. To them, it’s everything they want:
foreign culture, expensive, healthy, and hated by the ‘uneducated.’
-- White people like to study abroad
If you need to make up your own study abroad experience, they all
pretty much work the same way. You arrived in Australia not knowing
anybody, you went out to the bar the first night and made a lot of
friends, you had a short relationship with someone from a foreign
country, you didn’t learn anything, and you acquired a taste for
something (local food, beer, fruit). This latter point is important
because you will need to be able to tell everyone how it is unavailable
in your current country.
-- White people like coffee
There is no doubt that white people love coffee. Yes, it’s true that
asians like iced coffee and people of all races enjoy it. But I promise
you that the first person at your school to drink coffee was a white
person. You could kind of tell they didn’t enjoy it, but they did it
anyways until they liked it - like cigarettes.
Stuff White People Like is a great blog. Well written and witty. Perhaps even true.
But why, oh why, have so many people alerted me to the presence of this blog in the last two days? I don't get it. I am talking about a fucking wave here, folks. It isn't that one or two friends told me about this blog. It is more like 10 or 15. Something is happening here...
It reminds me of The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell, a gripping work about social epidemics and change. Gladwell defines the "tipping point" as the moment when everything boils over and becomes widespread. This is the moment when the line shoots up the chart. Kinda like this...
I think a lot of Gladwell's ideas can be applied to those things that go "viral" on the Internet. And it shows here...
But why does the huge skyward blast occur around the end of the first week of February and I am only hearing about it now? And why are so many people telling me about this blog right now instead of last week...or the week before? So weird.
